Mole Mapping

  • What is it about?

    Full body mole mapping involves high definition dermoscopy photos of suspicious moles and their placement on the body. If the classic dermoscopes can magnify 10-15times, the digital dermoscop of the mole mapping system can magnify 30 times. 

     

  • Who is it for?

    Mole mapping is not recommended to everyone. 

    It is mainly for patients with high risk melanoma, previous diagnosis of melanoma or multiple moles on the body with high risk of changing to melanoma .

  • What is it helpful with?

    The technique it’s called serial monitoring, and it is arguably, as research proves it, the best approach in diagnosing melanomas in very early stages.


    Mole mapping helps skin doctors to identify new moles that were not captured before and also monitor old ones for very early signs of changing, hence we can catch all the melanomas in situ (stage zero).

  • What is the cost?

    Mole mapping is not Medicare reimbursed, but some private insurance companies offer rebates for this service. It costs between 200-400AUD. 

  • How long it takes?

    It can take between 45-90 minutes, based on how many moles you need to have monitored.

  • How to prepare?

    · Make a list of any moles or spots that you are specifically concerned about.

    · Do not wear makeup or nail polish.

    · Wear easy to remove clothes and jewelries

    · If you have long hair, please put your hair up so the neck and shoulders can be visualized.

     

    Please note that we cannot evaluate any areas that are covered with clothing.

  • What to expect?

    • - Upon arrival, you will then be taken to the imaging suite. Please undress to your comfort level. 
    • - One of our skin doctors will conduct a skin check and mark the lesions that require monitoring . 
    • - One of our nurses will conduct the mole mapping process by taking macro images with all uncovered areas of your body, followed by dermoscopic images of the specified lesions. 
    • - At the end of the process the skin doctor will return to review the mole mapping report and the spots highlighted by the incorporated AI. You will be informed if there are any suspicious lesions and discuss further treatment and follow-ups. 
    • - You will be given the opportunity to schedule your next mole mapping session (usually in 6-12 months).
    • - You will be given a paper copy of your report and a digital copy sent by email that will include all your images and a summary of any suggestions that were made.
